The Los Angeles City Council officially inaugurated Imelda Padilla as a voting member and confirmed her victory in the special election for the Sixth District.
On July 5, while waiting for the final results of her win over council aide Marisa Alcaraz to be certified by the Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk’s office, Padilla was appointed as a temporary voting member by the council.
Joined by her family, Padilla took the oath of office and expressed her readiness to serve as a voting member for the Sixth District, advocating on behalf of its residents.
During the council meeting, Padilla took a moment to express her gratitude to her mother, who has always supported her in everything she does.
She stated, “As you will all witness, we are a family of hardworking individuals. My family has always been dedicated to their work, and I intend to follow suit in this capacity. I am excited about building coalitions.”
Padilla added, “I have assured my constituents that I will be intentional in my actions while serving on the council.”
Representative Tony Cárdenas, who previously represented the Sixth District, praised Padilla’s appointment and described it as a new era of leadership and representation.
Councilwoman Monica Rodriguez, who represents the neighboring Seventh District, thanked Cárdenas for joining the celebration and acknowledged the hard work and commitment it took to reach this moment.
Rodriguez said, “We all know that this is the result of a community-driven struggle to ensure representation that truly reflects who we are. Our journey here has been marked by dedication, perseverance, and a commitment to serving the community that has embraced us and shaped us into who we are today.”
Councilwoman Eunisses Hernandez expressed her gratitude for Padilla’s presence and highlighted the increased representation of women on the council, which she sees as a significant historical achievement.
As a community relations manager, 35-year-old Padilla will serve the remainder of former Council President Nury Martinez’s term, which concludes in December 2024. Martinez resigned in October after making racist remarks during a secretly recorded and leaked meeting. The Sixth District includes Van Nuys, Arleta, Lake Balboa, Panorama City, Sun Valley, and parts of North Hills and North Hollywood. The Council voted 12-0 to certify the results and welcome Padilla as a member, with councilmen Curren Price, Tim McOsker, and Paul Krekorian absent from the meeting.
