Illinois Man Unintentionally Shoots Himself in Sleep-Dream State

An Illinois man finds himself in legal trouble after inadvertently shooting himself in the leg while dreaming of a home invasion. Mark M. Dicara, a 62-year-old resident of Lake Barrington, was arrested by deputies from the Lake County Sheriff’s Department on two felony gun possession charges. The incident occurred on April 10, and authorities responded to a call reporting a gunshot wound. Upon arriving at Dicara’s residence, they found a gunshot wound on his leg and promptly applied a tourniquet to stop the bleeding. However, further investigation revealed that the shooting was not a result of a break-in attempt. Rather, Dicara had accidentally injured himself with his own .357 Magnum while dreaming of a home invasion. He had believed he was shooting at an intruder in his dream but woke up to the harsh reality of his self-inflicted wound. The bullet went through his leg and bedding but did not penetrate the shared wall with his neighbors. During the investigation, it was discovered that Dicara’s Firearm Owners Identification (FOID) card had been revoked, making it illegal for him to possess the gun he used in his dream. The reason for the revocation remains unknown. On June 9, the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office approved two felony charges against Dicara: possession of a firearm without a valid FOID card (a class 3 felony) and reckless discharge of a firearm (a class 4 felony). After posting a $150,000 bond, Dicara was released and is scheduled to appear in court on June 29.
