‘Illegal Marijuana Growth Results in Unsightly Remains’

A new bill passed by the Oregon Legislature reveals the state’s growing concern over illegal marijuana production. While Oregon is renowned for its high-quality cannabis, the demand for illicit marijuana has resulted in landowners being offered huge sums of cash to lease or sell their land which subsequently leaves behind a multitude of issues. Illegal growers leave pollution, garbage, and disturb the water table. This new bill seeks to hold the landowners accountable while also prohibiting the use of rivers or groundwater at the illegal site. Furthermore, criminal charges will apply when the identity papers of migrant workers who tend the plants are seized, or these workers are threatened with deportation. In the event that a landowner fails to pay for the cleanup, the bill authorizes local governments to file a claim of lien against property used for illegal marijuana growth. This bill comes at a time when the regulated market has already suffered profit loss due to oversupply. The Senate and House have passed the bill which is now pending the signature of Gov. Tina Kotek.
