If Christopher Nolan Directed, ‘Avengers’ Would Still Be Ongoing

  • Robert Downey Jr. playfully suggests that “The Avengers” would still be in production if Christopher Nolan had directed it.
  • Downey stars in Nolan’s latest film “Oppenheimer,” which was released on July 21.
  • Nolan is renowned for his meticulous filmmaking approach, often resulting in lengthy production timelines.

If you’re new to Christopher Nolan’s filmography, be prepared for an immersive and epic journey.

Nolan’s movies are renowned for their cerebral storytelling, non-linear narratives, breathtaking visuals, and notably, their extended running times. Films like “Interstellar” and “The Dark Knight Rises” push the boundaries, but his latest release, “Oppenheimer,” takes the crown with a staggering 180-minute duration.

However, it’s not just the length of Nolan’s films that stands out, but also the time he invests in their creation. As reported by ScreenRant, it took nearly a decade for Nolan to bring his vision for “Inception” to fruition after pitching the idea.

It’s no wonder that Robert Downey Jr., a cast member in “Oppenheimer,” humorously addressed Nolan’s reputation in a recent joint interview for Wired.

In the interview, Downey and Nolan were asked about the hypothetical scenario of Nolan directing “The Avengers.”

Downey, known for his role as Tony Stark (aka Iron Man) in the Marvel series, jokingly replied, “If Christopher Nolan had directed ‘The Avengers,’ we’d still be shooting it,” eliciting laughter from Nolan.

Although Nolan typically takes his time during the filmmaking process, the shooting for “Oppenheimer” was completed in just 57 days, according to Cillian Murphy’s guest appearance on Marc Maron’s “WTF” podcast.

Nevertheless, prior to Downey’s jest, Nolan referred to his potential involvement in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as a “multiverse conundrum.”

He also mentioned that if he had directed “The Avengers,” there would have been an abundance of Tony Stark scenes.

Nolan praised Jon Favreau, the director of “Iron Man,” during an episode of the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast. He described casting Downey as one of the greatest decisions in the history of cinema, acknowledging the incredible talent and potential the actor possessed.
