ICU Care No Longer Required for Female Transgender Cyclists Participating in Women’s Races

The UCI, the world cycling governing body, announced on Friday that female transgender athletes who transitioned after male puberty will no longer be allowed to compete in women’s races. This decision aligns with similar rulings made by the governing bodies in track and field and swimming, addressing the issue of fairness for transgender athletes in women’s events. This comes after American cyclist Austin Killips became the first openly transgender woman to win an official cycling event earlier this year.

In a statement, the UCI stated, “From now on, female transgender athletes who have transitioned after (male) puberty will be prohibited from participating in women’s events on the UCI International Calendar—in all categories—in the various disciplines.” The ban will take effect on Monday and is aimed at ensuring equal opportunities. Despite adhering to the UCI’s policy that requires transgender athletes to have serum testosterone levels of 2.5 nanomoles per liter or less for at least 24 months, Killips’ victory received negative backlash from some cycling fans and former racers.

The UCI also acknowledged that current scientific knowledge does not confirm that two years of gender-affirming hormone therapy is sufficient to nullify the benefits of testosterone gained during male puberty. The effects of gender-confirming hormone therapy are also difficult to ascertain. However, the UCI emphasized that cycling remains open to everyone, including transgender individuals. This decision aligns with the policy adopted by British Cycling in May.
