Iconic hotel chain Leonardo replaces old signs as jury’s out

Jason Carruthers, the Managing Director of the rebranded chain, Leonardo Hotels, is looking towards a future of expansion. The transition from Jurys Inn hotels to Leonardo hotels was completed last week with the removal of all the old signs in the UK and Ireland. When questioned about acquiring new properties for their Irish portfolio, Carruthers expressed interest but could not provide specific details at the moment. However, he did mention that the current cities where they have hotels are areas they would consider for future development.

Under the ownership of Israeli billionaire David Fattal, Leonardo Hotels has become one of the fastest growing hotel groups in Europe. With over 160 hotels in 14 countries and a global total of 255 hotels, including the high-end Leonardo Royal and boutique NYX brands, the brand is now firmly aligned with the wider business.

Carruthers didn’t feel sadness over the end of the Jurys Inn brand, which had a longstanding legacy in Dublin since its founding in 1839. He saw it as an opportunity for growth and progression. Moving to the Leonardo brand, which already had a proven track record in the UK and Europe with over 150 hotels, provided significant advantages.

One of the benefits of this rebranding is the potential to attract more international travelers. Carruthers noted that they are already seeing this in London, with customers from Europe and Israel choosing to stay in Leonardo properties. This exposure to new markets and increased global recognition is seen as a positive outcome.

Carruthers is currently seeking additional properties to add to the newly rebranded stable but cannot comment on any potential negotiations. He expressed a strong interest in the G Hotel in Galway, a location that he described as fantastic and desirable for any hotelier. Overall, the business in Ireland and the UK is performing very well, with positive signs of growth and record results in cities like Galway and Dublin.

Regarding recent negativity concerning Dublin city center, Carruthers acknowledged the media coverage of attacks on tourists but stated that he has not received any complaints from guests. He believes the city still has a great atmosphere, busy with people from all over the world and families enjoying their time there.

Apart from overseeing the rebranding process of Jurys Inn properties, Carruthers was also in Dublin to check on the progress of the new NYX brand boutique hotel in Portobello, set to open by the end of November. He expressed enthusiasm for the project and its potential success in Dublin, drawing from the positive reception of the NYX hotel in Holborn, London. The NYX concept offers a vibrant and fresh experience that Carruthers believes will resonate well with the Dublin market.
