CNN Senior International Correspondent Fred Pleitgen captured stunning footage during his report on the Icelandic region that is currently facing concerns about a potential volcanic eruption.
Grindavík, a town located on Iceland’s southern Reykjanes Peninsula, has been on high alert due to recent seismic activity. The Icelandic Meteorological Office has documented over 1,500 earthquakes in the area, causing significant damage and prompting evacuation warnings. This seismic activity is believed to be related to shifts in magma beneath the Earth’s crust, raising concerns about an impending volcanic eruption.
Pleitgen, accompanied by the Icelandic Coast Guard, conducted an aerial assessment of Grindavík and other affected areas to provide a firsthand look at the damage caused by the recent seismic events.
“The situation here is incredibly precarious,” Pleitgen remarked. “However, the authorities are working tirelessly to protect the town and its infrastructure.”
During the flight, Pleitgen’s team observed the most recent eruption site as well as the still-steaming lava fields, indicating the prolonged impact of past volcanic activity. The Icelandic government has issued warnings about the high probability of a major eruption in the vicinity.
