Ice hockey player Adam Johnson has tragically passed away following a “freak accident” during a Nottingham Panthers match against Sheffield Steelers on Saturday night.

The Panthers expressed their devastation and heartbreak after Johnson sustained a serious injury at Utilita Arena Sheffield.

The match was prematurely ended due to a “major medical emergency” caused by a collision during the game.

Adam Johnson, a 29-year-old American hockey player, suffered a neck injury caused by an ice hockey blade.

Emergency medical services attended to Johnson while his teammates formed a protective barrier and screens were erected around him.

He was transported to a hospital in Yorkshire, where the Nottingham Panthers later confirmed his unfortunate demise in a statement on Sunday morning.

“The club will deeply miss him and will never forget him,” the statement added.

“Adam, our number 47, was not only an exceptional ice hockey player but also a remarkable teammate and an extraordinary individual with a bright future ahead of him.

“The Panthers extend their thoughts and condolences to Adam’s family, partner, and friends during this incredibly difficult time.

“Everyone associated with the club, including players, staff, management, and ownership, is devastated by the news of Adam’s passing.”

Born in Minnesota, Johnson previously played for the Pittsburgh Penguins in the National Hockey League before joining the Malmo Redhawks in Sweden for the 2020-21 season.

He later played for the Ontario Reign in Canada and the Augsburger Panther in Germany before committing to the Nottingham Panthers for the 2023-24 campaign.

Sunday’s Elite League games in Belfast, Fife, and Guildford have been postponed following Johnson’s untimely death.

“The Elite Ice Hockey League is heartbroken to confirm the tragic passing of Nottingham Panthers forward Adam Johnson following a freak accident in Saturday’s game between Sheffield Steelers and Nottingham Panthers,” stated the league.

“In light of this deeply upsetting news, all games scheduled for Sunday, October 29, 2023, have been postponed,” the statement continued.

“The thoughts and condolences of the EIHL community are with Adam’s family, friends, and teammates during this incredibly sad and difficult time.”

Sheffield also expressed their condolences to Johnson’s partner, family, and teammates in their statement.
