Iain Henderson sympathizes with Cian Healy following his injury against Samoa: “It’s even more challenging when it happens to a teammate.”

Uncertainty Surrounds Prop’s World Cup Participation, but Henderson Remains Confident About Ireland’s Performance in Bayonne

After sustaining a calf injury, the prop departed Stade Jean Dauger on crutches and wearing a protective boot. Head coach Andy Farrell expressed concerns about the severity of the injury ahead of announcing the 33-man Rugby World Cup squad today.

However, Healy hopes for a more positive diagnosis once he returns to Dublin for further evaluation. It is expected that he will still be included in the squad, as Ireland assess the extent of his injury.

For Henderson, witnessing injuries to fellow players so close to the tournament is difficult.

“Throughout this campaign, I’ve had a glimpse of the disappointment that comes with injuries, especially when it happens to a teammate. It’s equally disheartening to see players from other nations, regardless of their World Cup experience, suffer such setbacks. It serves as a stark reminder of how fragile our careers can be,” he expressed.

Reflecting on Ireland’s performance against an impressively improved Samoa, Henderson admitted his dissatisfaction.

“While there were certain positives, we failed to execute our game-plan as intended. Nevertheless, we were relieved to secure the victory,” he shared, when asked about the silver linings in their performance.

He highlighted moments in the match where their strategies were effective, particularly in terms of managing territory and successful lineout defense. Henderson also acknowledged the challenging weather conditions and the pressure exerted by Samoa.

Regarding the impact of imminent squad selection on the players’ performance, the captain dismissed any significant influence.

“No, and even if it did, it would be another test to overcome as instructed by Faz. We anticipate facing much greater challenges in the coming weeks,” Henderson stated.

The squad will be revealed at 4:30 pm in Dublin as the team prepares to return to France for the World Cup, following their departure from Bayonne this afternoon.
