I Will Continue to Run, Regardless of Conviction and Sentence

Early Thursday afternoon, former President Donald Trump expressed enthusiasm about the “productive meeting” that his legal team had with the Department of Justice (DOJ) that morning. This led to speculation about a potential indictment in special counsel Jack Smith’s investigation into the January 6 Capitol riots. However, instead of the anticipated indictment, new federal charges were filed against Trump and two co-defendants in the Mar-a-Lago classified documents case. This surprising turn of events dramatically shifted Trump’s mood since Thursday morning.

In response to the new charges, which include additional obstruction counts and a willful retention of national defense information charge, Trump criticized the DOJ for engaging in “election interference at the highest level.” He claimed that his company, family, and himself are being harassed. Trump attributed this alleged harassment to his status as the frontrunner for the GOP nomination in the 2024 presidential election and leading in numerous polls against President Joe Biden. Despite the charges, Trump maintained his innocence and contended that the Presidential Records Act protects him from any wrongdoing.

Trump referred to special counsel Jack Smith as “deranged” in a post on his social media platform, Truth Social. He also reiterated his innocence and claimed to have willingly provided Mar-a-Lago security footage to Smith’s team, contradicting the allegations in the new charges that he and his aides attempted to delete the footage. Trump asserted that these charges are an attempt to intimidate people into fabricating lies about him. It is worth noting that legal experts have refuted his assertion that the Presidential Records Act shields him from indictment.

Despite the mounting legal issues, Trump remains determined to continue his campaign for the presidency. He stated that the Constitution does not prohibit him from running, even if he is convicted and sentenced for the crimes he has been accused of.
