‘I Simply Desire to Move On from This’

A mother, who tragically lost her husband and wrote a heartfelt children’s book about dealing with grief, is now facing accusations of his murder. Kouri Richins, 33, was denied bail during a detention hearing on Monday. The judge ruled that she posed a “substantial danger to the community.” According to ABC4, Richins broke down in tears as a detective testified about finding her husband, Eric Richins, lifeless and “cold to the touch” in their Utah home on March 4, 2022. Despite her attorneys arguing that the evidence against her is circumstantial, the prosecution portrays her as a calculating murderer who meticulously planned her husband’s demise and purchased drugs to carry it out.

One of the key witnesses for the prosecution is a housekeeper who reportedly sold Richins the alleged fentanyl used to kill Eric Richins. However, the credibility of this witness is being called into question, as she has motives to lie in order to reduce the drug charges she herself is facing. In a victim impact statement, Eric Richins’ sister, Amy Richins, characterizes her sister-in-law as “desperate, greedy, and extremely manipulative.”

Another witness, Jeff O’Driscoll, the lead investigator on the case, revealed that paramedics who attended to Eric Richins at the scene were told by Kouri Richins that she had attempted CPR on her husband. However, O’Driscoll testified that the paramedics contradicted this claim, as Eric Richins exhibited foaming at the mouth when CPR was initiated. If Kouri Richins had truly performed CPR beforehand, the foaming would have already occurred. Notably, Kouri Richins had also sent an email to authorities prior to her arrest, addressing various inquiries and asserting her innocence. She expressed a desire for the truth to come to light and to move on from the constant scrutiny faced from investigators and her late husband’s family.

Richins’ bail denial means she will remain in jail until her trial, scheduled for June 22. Should she decide to appeal the decision, she has a 30-day window to do so. Prosecutors have also mentioned Richins’ suspicious online search history. The case continues to unfold as authorities seek justice and closure for Eric Richins’ untimely death.
