I Ignored Cops: A Justifiable Action

In a fossil fuels protest held in Sweden last month, 20-year-old climate activist Greta Thunberg was among those detained for obstructing traffic. According to local media, Thunberg and a dozen other participants stopped oil trucks from passing through the port city of Malmo on June 19. The police at the Reclaim the Future protest instructed Thunberg and others to disperse, but they refused. In court, the Swedish Prosecution Authority revealed Thunberg’s guilt in disobeying the police’s instructions.

Thunberg’s punishment for her actions is a fine of $5 per day for 30 days, totaling $150. Additionally, she is required to contribute around $90 to Sweden’s Crime Victim Fund. Thunberg admitted in court that she did not comply with the police orders but maintained that she had not committed a crime. She argued that her actions were justified due to the urgent nature of the climate emergency, which poses threats to life, health, and property, affecting numerous individuals. According to a prosecutor interviewed by the AP, fines are a common penalty for acts of disobedience like Thunberg’s.
