‘I-95 Set to Open in Just 2 Weeks: A Monumental Achievement’

The collapsed section of Interstate 95 in Philadelphia is set to reopen within two weeks, announced Governor Josh Shapiro on Saturday. The governor made this announcement after joining President Biden on a helicopter tour to assess the damage on the highway, which has been closed to East Coast traffic since last weekend. Governor Shapiro expressed his confidence in the progress being made and highlighted the support received from President Biden in securing funding for both short-term and long-term solutions for the collapsed road. The Associated Press reports that Biden acknowledged the importance of the highway, which sees over 150,000 vehicles, including 14,000 trucks, pass through it daily. Reopening the highway is crucial to the economy and the residents’ quality of life in Philadelphia and the Northeast Corridor.

President Biden emphasized the significance of the stretch of highway to the city and the region, stating, “Over 150,000 vehicles travel on it every day, including 14,000 trucks. … It’s critical to our economy, and it’s critical to our quality of life.'” Governor Shapiro, sharing a timeline that would bring relief to commuters and long-haul truckers, confidently said with Biden by his side, “I can state with confidence that we will have I-95 reopened within the next two weeks. We are going to get traffic moving again thanks to the extraordinary work that is going on here.” The section of the main north-south highway on the East Coast collapsed after a tractor-trailer carrying gasoline overturned on an off-ramp and caught fire early last Sunday.

Governor Shapiro highlighted the unity and civic pride displayed by the people working on the project, stating that they were coming together to complete the job. President Biden instructed his team to prioritize the reopening of the highway, describing it as the most important project in the country at present. The plan involves using 2,000 tons of lightweight glass nuggets to fill in the collapsed area, facilitating smooth traffic flow while avoiding delays in the supply chain for other construction materials. Once the fill is in place, a new bridge will be built alongside it to redirect traffic while crews excavate the area and restore the exit ramp.
