The upcoming Hyundai Ioniq 5 and 6 electric vehicles will introduce a new charging port in the following year.

Hyundai announced on Thursday that it will adopt the North American Charging Standard (NACS) for its EVs, enabling compatibility with Tesla’s Supercharger network, which boasts over 12,000 stations.

Starting in Q4 2024, all Hyundai EVs will exclusively feature the NACS port. Older Hyundai models with the Combined Charging System (CCS) ports will be equipped with a Tesla adapter by early 2025.

Hyundai’s electric vehicle lineup includes the Ioniq 5, Ioniq 6, and the upcoming Ioniq 7. Additionally, the Kona Electric, Santa Fe, and Tucson plug-in hybrids complete the company’s electric portfolio.

The adoption of the NACS system will effectively double the size of the DC fast charging network accessible to Hyundai customers.

Hyundai is one of the later adopters of the NACS system, following Ford, General Motors, Rivian, Volvo, Polestar, Mercedes-Benz, Nissan, and Honda. These automakers have planned to embrace Tesla’s charging system. Notably, a consortium of automakers including Hyundai, BMW, General Motors, Honda, Kia, Mercedes-Benz, and Stellantis has also joined forces to create its own high-speed charging network, separate from Tesla.

Both Kia and Genesis, which are part of the Hyundai Motor Company family, have also announced the same timeline for their respective EV lineups. This includes the Kia EV6 and Genesis Electrified G80, GV60, and Electrified GV70.
