‘Hurriquake’ Earthquake Rattles Southern California, Reports NBC Los Angeles

On Sunday, Southern California experienced a double whammy from Mother Nature. First, a magnitude-5.1 earthquake struck Ventura County, causing widespread shaking. This quake coincided with the arrival of Hurricane Hilary, which brought much-needed rain to the region during its driest month of the year. Numerous aftershocks of magnitude-3.0 or higher were recorded.

The epicenter of the earthquake was located about four miles southeast of Ojai, approximately 80 miles northwest of Los Angeles. Several areas, including Ventura, Camarillo, Oxnard, and Thousand Oaks, reported shaking. Security camera footage from Tres Hermanas restaurant in Ojai captured the moment of the quake. Thankfully, no significant damage was reported, and an aerial survey conducted by the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department found no signs of harm to the surrounding area.

In response to the earthquake, the Los Angeles City Fire Department initiated its Earthquake Operation mode, conducting surveys for damage across all 106 neighborhood fire stations. Seismologist Dr. Lucy Jones remarked on the rarity of the event, noting that it was the first magnitude-5 quake in that location since 1932. She also mentioned the occurrence of a magnitude-5.1 earthquake in 1941 west of Sunday’s quake and aftershocks from the 1994 Northridge Earthquake east of the location.

Dr. Jones predicted that more aftershocks would likely follow in the coming days. The term “hurriquake” began trending on social media, underscoring the unusual combination of an earthquake and a tropical storm hitting Southern California simultaneously. This marks the first time in decades that a tropical storm warning has been issued for the region, with a flash flood warning covering most of Los Angeles County. Southern California has not experienced a tropical storm landfall since September 1939, when heavy damage ensued.

Millions of Southern Californians received emergency alerts on their phones, warning of both the flash flood and the earthquake. The situation remains dynamic, and updates will be provided as new information becomes available.
