Hunter Biden to plead guilty in July

Hunter Biden, the son of U.S. President Joe Biden, accompanied by his wife Melissa Cohen Biden, made an appearance at the White House in Washington on July 7, 2022, where President Biden awarded Presidential Medals of Freedom.

President Joe Biden’s son, Hunter, is scheduled to make a court appearance next month in federal court. It is expected that he will plead guilty to misdemeanor tax charges. This information was revealed in a court filing on Wednesday. Judge Maryellen Noreika has ordered the initial appearance to take place at 10 a.m. ET on July 26, at the U.S. District Court in Wilmington, Delaware.

This court proceeding comes after over a month of negotiations, during which Hunter Biden, aged 53, agreed to plead guilty to two misdemeanor charges related to federal income taxes. He also reached a separate agreement concerning a felony gun charge. Both Biden’s attorney and federal prosecutors requested that these matters be consolidated into one court appearance.

NBC News reported on Tuesday that the U.S. Attorney for Delaware, David Weiss, has agreed to recommend probation as the sentence for the tax crimes. Additionally, Hunter Biden has agreed to enter into a pretrial diversion agreement for the federal felony charge of possessing a gun as a user or addict of illegal drugs. Successfully completing this agreement can lead to the dismissal of the criminal charges.

Christopher Clark, the lawyer representing Hunter Biden, stated on Tuesday that with the plea agreement and diversion deal, the “five-year investigation into Hunter is resolved.” Clark has not commented on the judge’s order to schedule the upcoming hearing.

During an MSNBC appearance, Clark expressed his expectation that Hunter Biden will be released without conditions after the court proceeding, adding that Hunter is “happy to move on with his life.”

Judge Maryellen Noreika, aged 56, was nominated for the bench by then-President Donald Trump in 2017. She received bipartisan support from the Senate and was confirmed by voice vote in 2018.

According to the charging information for the tax crimes, Hunter Biden failed to pay federal income taxes in 2017 and 2018, despite earning an annual income of over $1.5 million and owing more than $100,000 each year. It is reported that these taxes have since been repaid.

The charging information also states that in 2018, Hunter Biden possessed a revolver despite knowing that he was an unlawful user of and addicted to a controlled substance.
