Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orban criticized the European Union for what he described as an “offensive” against LGBTQ rights, reaffirming his nationalist government’s commitment to protecting the country’s Christian heritage. Speaking in Romania, Orban, a longstanding critic of Brussels, expressed his hope that the upcoming European Parliament elections would empower governments within the bloc that oppose the “federalism” promoted by Germany and France.
Orban, who has been in power since 2010, ignited a dispute with the EU earlier this year by enacting a law that prohibits the dissemination of materials deemed to advocate for homosexuality and gender changes in schools, citing the need to safeguard children from “LGBTQ propaganda.” He has also clashed with the EU on issues such as the rule of law, media reforms, and judicial changes in Hungary.
Orban argued that the EU is divided between an empire-like central authority and individual nations, stating that the federalists are attempting to marginalize countries like Hungary. He asserted that the EU openly supported a change in government in Hungary in 2022, and claimed that Poland is facing similar pressure. Poland will hold parliamentary elections later this year, with the Law and Justice party seeking a third term. The party shares many policies with Orban’s government, and both countries are currently embroiled in disputes with the EU regarding the rule of law, leading to the suspension of certain EU funds.
Orban contended that the balance between federalists and nations resistant to yielding more power to Brussels was disrupted when the UK left the EU, leaving only Warsaw and Budapest as steadfast opponents of further centralization. In recent months, as Hungary’s economic difficulties have intensified, Orban has escalated his anti-LGBT rhetoric. The country’s inflation rate exceeded 25% in the first quarter.
“The EU rejects its Christian heritage, encourages population replacement through migration, and conducts an offensive against LGBTQ rights,” he stated on Saturday.
