Huawei’s Launch of HarmonyOS 4 Paves Way for China Smartphone Resurgence

The company has unveiled HarmonyOS 4, the latest version of its mobile operating system, and an enhanced A.I. assistant. Huawei’s flagship smartphones are now making a strong comeback, as the company focuses on re-establishing its strength in the industry.

HarmonyOS was initially launched by Huawei in 2019 as its own operating system, aiming to replace Google’s Android. Since then, Huawei has been continuously developing and improving HarmonyOS to regain market share in the smartphone industry. The release of HarmonyOS 4 underscores the company’s ambition to strengthen its smartphone business.

Despite being cut off from critical foreign chips, Huawei plans to re-enter the 5G smartphone market by the end of this year. The company expects to procure 5G chips domestically, allowing its flagship devices to connect to 5G networks and deliver super-fast internet speeds.

Huawei’s emphasis on the premium segment and its introduction of HarmonyOS demonstrate the company’s determination to challenge Apple and offer a unified software experience across different consumer electronic categories. With HarmonyOS running on over 700 million devices, Huawei aims to provide users with a more intelligent and personalized experience.

In addition to HarmonyOS 4, Huawei has also introduced an enhanced version of its AI voice assistant, Celia. Trained with Huawei’s Pangu AI model, Celia offers assistant features on smart devices and aims to improve productivity in various aspects of life and work.

Although Huawei’s rejuvenation in the smartphone market is primarily focused on China, where it accounts for 89% of its handset shipments, challenges remain in overseas markets. Huawei’s phones still lack 5G technology, and HarmonyOS does not have access to key apps such as Google, which many users outside of China rely on. Regaining ground overseas will take time and effort on Huawei’s part to address these key pain points and win back users who have switched to other phone brands.
