How You Can Help Maui

Oprah Winfrey and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson have pledged a generous $10 million to directly assist individuals on Maui who are unable to return to their homes due to the devastating wildfires. They have established a new fund called the People’s Fund of Maui, which aims to provide monthly payments of $1,200 to eligible adults, including homeowners and renters. This initiative, as stated on the fund’s official website, will also seek additional donations to extend the duration of support.

In a video announcement, Winfrey expressed her gratitude for the support of everyone who has reached out and asked how they can help. She emphasized that contributing to the fund is an actionable way to make a difference. The inspiration for this initiative stemmed from a similar fund created by Dolly Parton after the wildfires in Gatlinburg, Tennessee in 2016, which claimed lives and destroyed numerous structures. Winfrey’s team sought guidance from the Dollywood Foundation, which ultimately provided $11 million in assistance to families who lost their homes.

Both Winfrey and Johnson have personal connections to Maui and the state of Hawaii. Winfrey, who resides on the island part-time, visited an emergency shelter in the aftermath of the wildfire and expressed concerns about effectively providing resources to affected residents. Johnson, on the other hand, spent part of his youth in Hawaii. The fund is sponsored by the Entertainment Industry Foundation, a non-profit organization based in Los Angeles that assists celebrities in their philanthropic endeavors.

The goal is for the People’s Fund of Maui to continue providing transfers to eligible residents for at least six months, but the length of support will ultimately depend on the support and donations from the American public. Winfrey encourages individuals to rally behind this cause and determine the fund’s duration through their generosity. This initiative not only showcases the compassion and dedication of Winfrey and Johnson, but also highlights the power of collective action in times of crisis.
