Speaking on this revelation, Brooks said, “If you’re a waiter or know someone in the service industry, then this psychology hack is a must-know. Mastering psychology hacks is an art form because, at the core, we are all social creatures.”

Brooks recounts a waitress’s quest to discover a psychology trick that would lead to increased tips. To unravel this mystery, she tested positive reinforcement against mirroring. Positive reinforcement involves responding to a group’s order with phrases like “great choice,” “no problem,” and “coming right up.” Consequently, after testing this method with 30 groups, the waitress moved on to the mirroring technique.

Explaining mirroring, Brooks states that it entails simply repeating the order back word for word. The results revealed that mirroring led to an average tip increase of 70%, nearly doubling the waitress’s earnings. Brooks further asserts that the FBI frequently employs this technique, referring to it as a “real life Jedi mind trick.”
