How the AI revolution is impacting high-paying careers

The impact of the AI revolution on tech workers has been significant, with a decrease of more than a third in roles such as data management, IT support analysts, and web designers. This information is based on studies conducted by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, the University of Pennsylvania, and Goldman Sachs.

Unions have expressed concerns about the increasing prevalence of AI in the workplace and have called on the government to regulate this emerging technology. A survey conducted by tech union Prospect found that less than half of the respondents were confident that their employers would consult them before implementing AI technology at work.

Prospect’s deputy general secretary, Andrew Pakes, emphasized the importance of proper consultation with workers before implementing new technology. He stated, “Advances in technology have the potential to bring huge benefits to both employers and workers. But there needs to be proper consultation with workers about what is being introduced and how before anything is implemented.”

A report by pollster Ipsos reveals that Britons are becoming increasingly apprehensive about using AI compared to other countries. Only 12% of respondents believed that AI would create more job opportunities than it would eliminate, and less than half (46%) stated that businesses should embrace AI in the workplace.

According to the report, customer service jobs are expected to disappear as automation becomes more prevalent. While approximately four in 10 respondents did not expect AI to impact their job within the next year, only one in four held the same belief when looking five years into the future.

Andrew Hunter, of Adzuna, warned that skilled, white-collar workers who rely on their expertise could be particularly vulnerable to AI. The technology is increasingly capable of replicating human responses and outputs. Hunter also noted that job vacancies have declined across various industries, potentially due to the adoption of AI. However, he added that AI will also create new job opportunities, such as prompt engineers, as companies strive to leverage advancements.

In related research, nonprofit employment network Generation found that entry-level tech jobs have effectively vanished. The report revealed that 94% of employers in more than 16 industries require prior work experience, with two-thirds of companies specifically demanding at least one year of experience.
