If Boris Johnson had expected a calm and relaxing end to the year, his plans have been completely disrupted.
Despite the scrutiny from Tory backbenchers and some Cabinet ministers, the Prime Minister has made the decision not to enforce any additional restrictions leading up to Christmas.
However, Telegraph columnist and co-host of the popular Planet Normal podcast, Allison Pearson, believes that the current response is already an overreaction. She argues, “The restrictions they are discussing, even the ones currently in place, should only be implemented during a state of emergency. We are not in a state of emergency.” Pearson points to initial data suggesting that the Omicron variant of the coronavirus produces less severe symptoms.
“To me, it is a matter of how quickly we have forgotten our rights to enjoy our freedoms,” Pearson adds.
