How much does water cremation, the latest funeral trend, actually cost?

After the water cremation cycle is completed, the remaining soft bones are dried and transformed into a white powder resembling ash. This powder is then returned to the family in an urn.

The Church of England reportedly discussed the practice of resomation during a Synod and is currently exploring ways to provide appropriate liturgy and support for these types of funerals.

Is it truly eco-friendly?

Some providers claim that water cremation is more environmentally friendly compared to traditional methods as it does not emit air pollutants.

However, this claim has not been fully validated yet. The Co-op has stated that it will collaborate with academic experts to gain a better understanding of the environmental impact of water cremation.

Resomation, a British company supplying equipment to the Co-op, asserts that the process produces one-third less greenhouse gas compared to flame cremation and uses less than one-fifth of the energy required.

Critics of flame cremation argue that it releases mercury from dental amalgam into the environment, which can be absorbed by plants and consumed by small fish.

What is the cost of water cremation?

The Co-op anticipates that the costs of water cremation will be similar to those of a regular cremation. Exact figures will be disclosed later this year upon the official launch of the service.

Currently, the Co-op offers unattended direct cremation and direct burial services starting from £1,195. However, prices vary depending on location, third-party fees, and the chosen plan.
