Rory’s Energy Soared Upon Arrival at Our Destination

Rory displayed signs of nervousness during the car ride, refusing to sleep or engage with the toys provided.
However, once we reached our destination, Rory’s energy reached unprecedented levels.
She spent hours sprinting around our rental house, barking, and leaping onto furniture. Taking multiple walks, offering treats, or providing cuddles did nothing to calm her down. It wasn’t until late at night, when she finally collapsed in bed, that her ceaseless activity ceased.
According to Dr. Stacy, there were several factors contributing to Rory’s excessive energy upon arrival.
“When dogs enter a new environment, they often feel overwhelmed by the abundance of things to explore. This can lead to increased excitement,” explained Dr. Stacy.
Furthermore, the stress of the road trip ramped up Rory’s endorphin levels, causing her to become excessively energetic. Dr. Stacy also suggested that this heightened energy may have been a manifestation of underlying anxiety.
“If a dog has an existing anxiety disorder, it can become more pronounced and result in hyperactive behavior when introduced to a new place,” added Dr. Stacy.
Since that initial trip, my partner and I have made it a practice to take Rory for a long walk before embarking on a car ride. We now anticipate her anxiety and prepare for it when arriving in unfamiliar locations.
