King underscored his advice to Robin, assuredly recommending that she acquire a new feline companion. He was pleasantly surprised when Robin, who has one adult daughter, took his advice immediately.
After leaving King’s office, Robin made a stop at a farm produce stand, where she purchased fresh corn and cantaloupe. While browsing, she noticed a playful black and white kitten.
Robin exclaimed, “The kitten caught my eye! She was from a litter of five and had lost her front left paw.”
The workers at the stand explained that the kitten had lost her paw shortly after she was born due to a shed incident where something fell off a wall and severed the limb.
Remarkably, the missing limb did not hinder the kitten’s ability to play and move around, according to Robin.

Upon arriving home, Robin had no doubt about what she should name the spirited 7-week old feline.
She declared, “I decided to name her Earlene, after Dr. Earl King. He not only assists with my breathing, but he also cares for my overall well-being.”
Robin reflected, “In this instance, he healed my heart. Everything changed for the better when I found Earlene.”
Robin, who has battled COPD for years and has faced multiple breathing-related hospitalizations, recounted her grief after the sudden death of her previous cat, Datura.
She said, “Datura was a solid black domestic shorthair that I had rescued. I’ve loved cats since I started chasing kittens at the age of 5.”
While Robin had always planned on getting another cat, King’s prescription intensified her desire to bring joy back into her life. Robin, a retired purchasing agent, firmly believes that this serendipitous event was destined to happen.
She explained, “I wholeheartedly believe this was meant to be. Earlene enjoys watching television with me and cuddling in bed next to me.”
Robin added with a smile, “She’s a sweet and affectionate kitten, although she does tend to wake me up at 1 a.m. to play. She uses her stubby little paw to gently rub my face.”
King expressed his satisfaction at Robin finding a new kitten so quickly, particularly one with a disability.
He said, “I’m genuinely delighted that Robin found a new cat. It’s especially meaningful that she chose a kitten with a disability.”
According to Robin, getting a kitten was the perfect remedy for her sadness.
She concluded, “Without a doubt, Earlene was the best choice from the litter.”
