House Republicans have issued a subpoena to a federal prosecutor involved in the ongoing criminal investigation into Hunter Biden, son of President Joe Biden. The subpoena demands answers regarding what the Republicans allege to be interference by the Justice Department in the case. The subpoena, issued to assistant U.S. attorney for Delaware Lesley Wolf, was called for by Rep. Jim Jordan, chair of the House Judiciary Committee.
In a letter accompanying the subpoena, Jordan stated that Wolf possesses information crucial to the committee’s inquiry that is not available through other sources. The Justice Department has not yet responded to the request for comment.
The latest subpoena to Wolf is part of a sprawling impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden and his family’s international business affairs. Republicans have been seeking evidence directly implicating the president in any wrongdoing but have so far been unsuccessful.
The focus of the inquiry is on both the Biden family’s international business dealings and the Justice Department’s investigation into Hunter Biden. According to Republicans, the investigation into Hunter Biden has been slow-walked and stonewalled since it was opened in 2018. Whistleblowers from the Internal Revenue Service have accused Wolf of deviating from standard investigative protocol and showing preferential treatment because Hunter Biden is the president’s son.
In addition, it has been claimed that Wolf refused to discuss an email referencing the “big guy” (known to be Hunter Biden’s father) and ordered investigators to remove any mention of “Political Figure 1” (Biden) from a search warrant. FBI officials also notified Hunter Biden’s Secret Service detail in advance of an effort to interview him and his business associates.
While Justice Department officials have countered these claims, Republicans are demanding that Wolf appear before lawmakers because of her “first-hand knowledge of the Department’s criminal inquiry of Hunter Biden.” They believe she may be able to shed light on whether President Biden played any role in the Department’s investigation or attempted to obstruct it in any way.
