House Deflects on Impeachment, Despite Boebert’s Push for a Vote

The House successfully thwarted an attempt to impeach President Biden on Thursday, although Republican leaders still had to appease their more extreme members who pushed for the vote. According to Politico, the chamber voted 219-208 to refer two articles of impeachment to committees that are already investigating the administration. While Republican Rep. Lauren Boebert, who initiated the vote, celebrated the result, it is important to note that the committees are not obligated to take action on the articles. Boebert exclaimed, “For the first time in 24 years, a House Republican-led majority is moving forward with impeachment proceedings against a current president.”

However, many Republicans were not pleased about being forced to vote on this issue, as reported by The New York Times. Rep. Garret Graves, who voted yes, clarified that it does not mean he supports Boebert’s objective. He emphasized that impeachment is a substantial power that Congress possesses and should not be utilized casually, especially within just two days. Speaker Kevin McCarthy, who has expressed that there is no basis for removing Biden, actively campaigned against impeachment. The fact that the vote was forced despite McCarthy’s opposition showcases his lack of control over his own party members, according to the AP.

Democrats seized the opportunity to criticize Republicans over this matter. Rep. Jim McGovern stated, “They can try to impeach Joe Biden all they want, but all they are doing is impeaching themselves and making a mockery of this place.” Boebert’s proposition argues that Biden’s immigration policies constitute high crimes and misdemeanors, and that his lenient border policies led to an “invasion” of the US—a phrasing often associated with extremist replacement theories. It is worth noting that this vote took place just one day after the GOP-led House censured Democratic Rep. Adam Schiff.
