Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R) and California Governor Gavin Newsom (D) will engage in a “red state vs. blue state” debate on Fox News, according to an announcement made by the network on Monday.
This highly anticipated showdown between DeSantis and Newsom, who are both prominent figures in their respective parties, is scheduled for November 30th. It will be the first time that these two influential governors face off in a debate.
The debate will be aired on Sean Hannity’s show and will take place in Georgia.
Sean Hannity, the conservative network’s moderator for the debate, stated, “I’m excited to provide viewers with an engaging and informative debate about the critical issues and governing philosophies that impact all Americans.”
The idea for the debate was first proposed by Hannity when Newsom appeared on his show in June. They had previously clashed over DeSantis allegedly tricking migrants into traveling to blue states with the false promise of work papers and immigration assistance.
“Why do you use people as pawns?” questioned Newsom. “What faith tradition teaches you to treat human beings in such a disrespectful manner?”
In August, DeSantis, who is seeking the Republican presidential nomination, agreed to the debate. During an interview, he confidently stated, “I’m ready. Let’s make it happen. Just tell me the time and place.”
The two governors often engage in social media spats, with DeSantis criticizing California’s economic policies and Newsom condemning DeSantis’ conservative social stance, especially regarding lessons on race and LGBTQ+ history in schools.
Newsom once admitted that he watched an excessive amount of Fox News to track conservative talking points, prompting his staff to intervene. He stated in July, “My staff has actually attempted interventions with me about it. They claim I’m overly fixated on it, but I believe it’s important to understand the patterns that emerge.”
