Hotelier Launches Women-Exclusive Bed-and-Breakfast Haven as Safe Space from Men

  • A Chinese hotelier has opened a women-only bed-and-breakfast in Lijiang, Yunnan.
  • Tired of male guests looking for casual partners, the owner, Lu, made this decision.
  • Lu’s motivation comes from a female guest who got scammed at one of her other locations.

A hotelier in China has recently opened a women-only bed-and-breakfast in Lijiang, Yunnan, as reported by local media.

The owner, identified as Lu, made this decision due to her frustration with male guests who sought casual companionship at her establishments.

In recounting the incident that prompted this change, Lu revealed that a female guest at one of her other locations fell victim to a scam artist.

According to the guest, she had chosen to take a holiday in March to recover from a previous relationship, only to encounter the fraudster during her stay.

“As soon as they left Lijiang together, the police arrested the man before he even got off the plane. That’s when she found out he was a scam artist,” Lu shared in an interview with Sohu Qianliyan. “The whole experience left the girl shaken and frightened.”

Lu’s intention with her women-only homestay is to provide a safe and relaxing environment for female travelers, where they don’t feel pressured to socialize or deal with the presence of men seeking casual relationships.

Additionally, Lu hopes to preserve the image of Lijiang as a romantic tourist destination, free from any reputation of being a hub for sleazy encounters or guests taking advantage of others.

The opening of the women-only homestay in June received mixed reactions on Weibo, China’s equivalent of Twitter. Some users praised Lu’s business initiative, while others argued for the establishment of male-only holiday locations in Lijiang to ensure fairness.

“That’s great! With multiple options, it’s especially suitable for solo female travelers,” commented one user.

However, there were also critics who questioned the exclusion of men, asking if women are free from fraudulent behavior.

Another user suggested opening a male-only establishment, but acknowledged the potential backlash and criticism it would receive.

“This boss is fantastic! It’s not just about making money; they are also prioritizing the safety of their guests,” praised one blogger.
