A British nurse has been terminated from her job following her involvement in a year-long affair with a patient, which tragically ended in the patient’s death. The incident took place in the parking lot of a hospital in Wrexham, Wales. The patient, known as patient A, had been receiving dialysis treatment and passed away due to a heart attack during a late-night encounter with the nurse, Penelope Williams.
According to reports from The Times UK, Patient A’s cause of death was determined to be “heart failure and chronic kidney disease triggered by a medical episode.” This event prompted an investigation by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) fitness-to-practice panel.
During the hearing, it was revealed that Williams had ignored advice from colleagues who had advised her to call an ambulance when Patient A collapsed in his car. Instead, she called a colleague for assistance, who then urged her to contact emergency services. However, there was a delay before a call was made, as Williams was distraught and seeking help to explain the situation.
Eventually, the colleague took matters into their own hands and called an ambulance. Unfortunately, when they arrived, Patient A was already deceased. The disciplinary hearing confirmed that Williams and Patient A had been engaged in a sexual relationship for a year. The night of his death, he suffered a heart attack with his trousers around his ankles during their encounter in the parking lot.
Initially, Williams provided false information to the police and paramedics, claiming that she had met with Patient A after he messaged her on Facebook, expressing that he felt unwell. She stated that they had spent around 30 to 45 minutes in the back of his car, merely talking. However, during a later hearing, she admitted to the ongoing relationship and revealed that the purpose of their meeting that night was for a sexual encounter. This admission ultimately led to her dismissal from her position.
The disciplinary board found that Williams’ actions had brought disrepute to the nursing profession. They determined that her actions were incompatible with remaining on the nursing register and would undermine public confidence in the profession and the NMC as a regulatory body.
This unfortunate incident serves as a reminder of the importance of upholding high professional standards and how actions outside of those standards can have severe consequences.
