The nearly 14-foot-long reptile was first sighted by a witness named JaMarcus Bullard, who encountered it near a canal while on his way to a job interview.
“I observed the alligator. It seemed to be carrying a body in its mouth, so I started recording,” shared JaMarcus Bullard with Spectrum Bay News 9.
JaMarcus Bullard further added, “To discourage it, I hurled a rock towards it, and I realized it was indeed a lower torso inside the alligator’s mouth. It steadily swam backwards towards the lower part of the canal.”
Bullard promptly reported the sighting to the fire department with the video evidence, prompting them to contact 911.
The Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office, in collaboration with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, humanely put down the alligator.
Bullard witnessed the animal being retrieved from the water by emergency services, who had to resort to firing a few shots at it.
The sheriff’s dive team successfully recovered the remains of the deceased individual after the alligator was neutralized.
An autopsy will be conducted to determine the exact cause of death. The identity of the deceased is currently unknown, according to the authorities.
Another eyewitness, Jennifer Dean, mentioned that alligators were not uncommon in the area but the one she encountered was by far the largest.
The incident occurred in Ridgecrest Park, located outside Tampa, which features a five-acre lake known to be inhabited by alligators.
A photo shared by Spectrum Bay News 9 reporter Holly Gregory shows the animal alongside a pool of blood, captured from an aerial perspective.
The involvement of the alligator in the person’s demise remains unclear at this time.
Unprovoked alligator attacks are infrequent, and fatal incidents are extremely rare. According to AZ Animals, Florida records an average of six fatal alligator attacks annually.
In a remarkable hunting achievement, a Florida hunter recently captured a 13 feet 3 ¼ inches alligator weighing 920 pounds.
Correction: September 24, 2023 – An earlier version of this story incorrectly stated that the alligator was walking alongside the canal.
