“Honoring Fallen LA County Sheriff’s Deputy Ryan Clinkunbroomer: A Shining Light Within” – Vigil Commemorated by Orange County Register

Community leaders, family, residents, and law enforcement personnel came together on Sunday evening, September 17, to pay tribute to Deputy Ryan Clinkunbroomer, who was tragically shot and killed while sitting in his patrol vehicle at a red light in Palmdale over the weekend. The vigil, which began at 7 p.m., attracted around 300 people who gathered outside the Palmdale station of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, where Deputy Clinkunbroomer had served since 2018. The station was adorned with candles, and fire engines were lined up along Sierra Highway. A sheriff’s helicopter circled overhead before the vigil commenced.
Diane and Gene Jaimieson, Palmdale residents, were among the early attendees who wanted to honor the fallen deputy. Diane, 74, expressed her sorrow and concern about the incident, emphasizing that even being so close to a safety net does not guarantee safety in today’s cruel and evil world. She sympathized with Deputy Clinkunbroomer’s family, describing their loss as heartbreaking. Lisa Schick and Karlee Latka, both family friends, also brought flowers to pay their respects to the fallen deputy.
The tragic incident took place on September 16, 2023, when Deputy Clinkunbroomer was shot and killed in his patrol car while waiting at a red light at the intersection of Sierra Highway and Avenue Q, right next to the Palmdale Sheriff’s Station. Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna expressed his deep sadness during a news conference on Sunday and announced a $250,000 reward for any information leading to the capture of the suspect or suspects involved in the shooting.
Deputy Clinkunbroomer, aged 30, came from a family dedicated to law enforcement, with both his father and grandfather having served as deputies. Known affectionately as “Clink” by his colleagues, he had been with the Sheriff’s Department for eight years and had been working as a field training officer for a year and a half. He had recently gotten engaged, just four days prior to the tragic incident.
The vigil concluded with a poignant moment of silence and the collective singing of “Amazing Grace” by the attendees. Palmdale Mayor Laura Bettencourt highlighted Deputy Clinkunbroomer’s commitment to service, protection, and the safety of the community. Alongside other officials, she announced rewards totaling $250,000 for anyone with vital information about the ambush slaying of the third-generation deputy.
