Relatives of Nathan Law, a prominent exiled pro-democracy legislator from Hong Kong, were briefly detained and questioned by the local police on Tuesday. The authorities suspected that Law’s family members might have been providing him with financial or other forms of assistance, prompting the investigation. No arrests were made at the time, but the investigation remains ongoing, according to the South China Morning Post.

The incident occurred as part of the government’s intensified crackdown on dissent in Hong Kong, specifically targeting opponents of the controversial 2020 national security law who have fled overseas and those who continue to advocate for democracy within the city. Hong Kong’s Chief Executive, John Lee, issued a warning that investigations into these activists would escalate, extending to individuals who offer material support or exert influence behind the scenes.

Last week, five members of Law’s outlawed Demosisto opposition party were arrested on suspicion of providing him and other protestors abroad with funds to sustain their pro-democracy activism through various channels, including social media and mobile applications. Additionally, they are accused of publishing seditious social media posts advocating for Hong Kong independence and expressing hostility towards the central and Hong Kong governments.

In defiance of the lack of extradition treaties between China and the countries where the eight targeted individuals currently reside (Britain, the United States, Canada, and Australia), Chief Executive John Lee pledged to pursue them for life. Notably, bounties amounting to $127,756 were offered for any information leading to the arrest of Nathan Law or any other targeted activists.

Law, who has severed all contact with his family since fleeing abroad in 2020, expressed concerns about his safety in light of the bounty on his head. He acknowledged the possibility that someone in the UK or elsewhere might provide information about his whereabouts to the Hong Kong authorities, potentially endangering his freedom during travels or transits.
