Hometown Celebrations in Store for Little League World Series Champions

The Little League World Series champions are set to return to El Segundo on Monday. They will be greeted with a caravan on Main Street, resembling the welcome of rock stars. The caravan will begin at 3:30 p.m. at Imperial Highway and head south towards El Segundo Boulevard, as announced on the El Segundo Little League’s Facebook page. The public is encouraged to show their support by bringing signs, wearing ESLL clothing or colors, and even bringing balloons, kids, pets, and cheers.

Additionally, a parade honoring the team will take place on Main Street on September 10, according to the league’s recent announcement.

El Segundo emerged victorious in a thrilling fashion on Sunday, winning the Little League World Series. Louis Lappe’s home run in the bottom of the sixth and final inning secured a 6-5 victory over the all-star team from Willemstad’s Pabao Little League, based in Curacao, at South Williamsport, Pennsylvania. Lappe, who hit his fifth home run of the series, stated that he was only aiming for a good pitch and his focused mindset paid off with the homer.

El Segundo manager, Danny Boehle, expressed his surprise at the decision to pitch to Lappe, but emphasized that in baseball, you cannot put the winning run on first base regardless of the circumstances. Willemstad allowed their first home run in all six games of the World Series during this match.

El Segundo’s success was supported by Lappe’s consistent performance on the field. He reached base in all three of his plate appearances, scoring a run and making a significant impact on the game. The team displayed impressive teamwork and resilience throughout, ultimately securing their 5-1 lead and withstanding Willemstad’s tying grand slam to clinch the victory.

The winning pitcher, Brody Brooks, played a crucial role in the final inning as he did not allow any hits, walked one, and struck out two. In contrast, Juan Cleto Ferreras of Willemstad faced difficulties as he was charged with the loss after allowing two runs and four hits in 2 1/3 innings, striking out six and walking one.

El Segundo faced numerous challenges on their path to becoming the fourth Little League World Series champions from Los Angeles County. Despite several players falling ill with a stomach virus during the tournament, the team rallied and overcame obstacles to reach the U.S. championship game. In a remarkable turnaround, they avenged their earlier loss to the Needville Little League with a 6-1 victory in the U.S. championship game. El Segundo’s summer record of 20-2 across five tournaments highlights their exceptional performance.

2022 marked the second consecutive year that Willemstad reached the championship game, but ultimately faced defeat. Curacao-based teams have previously made it to the championship game five times, with Willemstad winning in 2004 and experiencing losses in 2005, 2019, 2022, and 2023. Other victorious Los Angeles County teams include the all-star teams from the Granada Hills National Little League in 1963 and the Long Beach Little League in 1992 and 1993.
