Homes in Rolling Hills Estates Continue to Collapse, Leaving Residents in Despair

A cluster of luxurious residences in Rolling Hills Estates experienced extensive damage on Monday due to a massive landslide that began over the weekend. The incident prompted the evacuation of these structures and raised concerns about other properties in the vicinity.

Residents residing on Peartree Lane noticed the land shifting at approximately 4 p.m. on Saturday and were swiftly evacuated.

County Supervisor Janice Hahn, who has been present in the neighborhood since the news broke, mentioned on Monday that “the land has shifted 20 feet since my visit to Rolling Hills Estates yesterday afternoon.”

“Homes have now completely collapsed into the canyon,” she stated on her Twitter page.

Hahn declared that she would hold a meeting with affected residents later on Monday alongside officials from the county assessor’s office to discuss the situation. Some residents are worried that their homeowners’ insurance policies may not cover the loss of their homes caused by the landslide.

Speaking to reporters at the scene on Monday, Hahn confirmed that the homes were irreparably damaged as they continued to slide into the canyon.

The Los Angeles County Fire Department issued evacuation orders on Saturday after the issue was initially detected, leaving homeowners helpless as they witnessed their properties sink and crumble.

Deputies from the sheriff’s Lomita station were dispatched to patrol the neighborhood and ensure the safety of the evacuated homes,” Hahn assured.

“In this photo, it’s difficult to observe, but there are homes here in Rolling Hills Estates that are visibly leaning, like this garage, due to the landslide,” she posted on Twitter. “I had the opportunity to speak with evacuated residents. Everyone is safe, but these homes are currently too precarious to enter. I have already consulted with our Public Works Director Mark Pastrella, and we are extending our complete support to the city and its residents.”

On Sunday afternoon, Hahn provided a disheartening update stating, “Extensive land movement overnight has completely demolished the homes along the canyon on Peartree Lane here in Rolling Hills Estates,” accompanied by photographs of the damage. “This is absolutely devastating for these residents. My office is prepared to provide any assistance we can to these families and the city.”

She followed up by saying, “Homes have been dislodged from their foundations. The land is still shifting, but the evacuation order is currently limited to these 12 homes. Building and Safety officials are on-site and continuously monitoring the situation.”

Electricity in the area was shut off on Saturday, and utility crews ensured that no gas or power lines were disrupted, as confirmed by authorities.

The American Red Cross is assisting in finding temporary shelter for the displaced families.

The cause of the landslide remains unclear, and fortunately, there have been no reports of any injuries.
