Home improvement giants Home Depot and Lowe’s invest in electric power tools and landscaping equipment

Landscaping crews in California, including Everthrive Landscape, have started using battery-powered tools. Meanwhile, Home Depot and Lowe’s have seen an increasing demand for battery-powered outdoor tools like leaf blowers, mowers, and string trimmers. The transition from gas-powered to electric-powered tools could potentially boost sales for the home improvement retailers, which have experienced weaker store traffic and declining sales. Battery-powered tools have prompted upgrades and attracted both DIY customers and home professionals to make larger purchases at the stores. The introduction of new and innovative products like higher-quality paint, flooring, and appliances could also drive sales. Home Depot aims to have over 85% of its U.S. and Canada sales for outdoor power equipment running on rechargeable batteries by January 2029. Battery-powered cordless units already account for nearly two-thirds of sales in the outdoor power tools market. Lowe’s has also witnessed significant growth in the sales of cordless power tools and outdoor power equipment over the past five years. However, obstacles to adoption include higher upfront costs due to the inclusion of batteries and chargers in the equipment’s price. Despite this, manufacturers have continued to improve battery-powered tools, resulting in longer battery life and more power. Moreover, some states and cities have proposed or implemented restrictions on gas-powered equipment and provided incentives for battery-powered alternatives. The convenience and environmental benefits of battery-powered tools, coupled with the rise of remote work and increased awareness of emissions, have further fueled their popularity among homeowners. Notably, California has passed a law that bans the sale of emissions-producing engines for small off-road equipment like mowers and blowers starting in 2024. While battery-powered tools have gained traction among DIY customers, Home Depot aims to win over professionals by offering dedicated support, special pricing, and rewards through its pro loyalty program. Equipment manufacturers, such as John Deere, Toro, and Stanley Black & Decker-owned DeWalt, stand to benefit from the increased demand for battery-powered tools and have exclusive deals with home improvement retailers. However, some retailers, like Tractor Supply, have been slower to adopt battery-powered outdoor equipment due to limited customer interest and battery capabilities. Golf courses, such as TPC Sawgrass and Bay Hill Club and Lodge, have started using battery-powered landscaping equipment, although full adoption remains challenging due to cost, limited availability of electric models, and occasional time constraints where gas-powered tools are more efficient. Nevertheless, the growing popularity of quieter and more environmentally friendly landscaping tools is being embraced by homeowners and property managers in suburban neighborhoods.
