The Los Angeles City Council has unanimously approved the allocation of $1.6 million towards a street improvement project in Hollywood. The primary objective of this project is to reduce traffic congestion in heavily congested neighborhoods.
The vote was 12-0, with members Curren Price, Nithya Raman, Hugo Soto-Martinez, and Kevin de León absent during the vote.
In August, Soto-Martinez, who represents Hollywood’s 13th District, made amendments to a motion introduced by then-Councilman Mitch O’Farrell in December 2019.
According to the motion, there is approximately $1.6 million available from CRA/LA Excess Non-Housing Bond Proceeds in District 13. Originally, these funds were intended for the Beverly/Madison Improvements Project.
However, the council determined that the proposed public infrastructure improvements in the Beverly/Madison project would conflict with other planned improvements.
Soto-Martinez amended the motion to allocate the funding to the Department of Transportation’s Neighborhood Enhanced Networks (NEN) as part of the Mobility Plan 2035.
NEN aims to redesign and transform neighborhood streets with heavy traffic into streets that prioritize public transportation, sustainable greenery, beautification, and community spaces such as parks, play areas, and exercise equipment.
The NEN project in the 13th District will involve reconfiguring and reprogramming the streets through a planning and design approach that integrates transportation engineering, landscape architecture, forestry, and stormwater capture, as mentioned in the motion.
Before any funds are provided, the CRA/LA Bond Oversight Committee, Trade, Travel and Tourism Committee, and other applicable committees will review and make final recommendations on any proposals for the project. These recommendations will be presented to the council and mayor.
