Hollywood Labor Strife Delays Motion Picture Academy Governors Awards

Amid the ongoing strike of Hollywood writers and actors, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced the postponement of its annual Governors Awards event. The event, originally scheduled for November 18 at the Fairmont Century Plaza in Century City, will now take place on January 9 at the same venue. The Academy did not provide a specific reason for the delay, but similar strikes by the Writers Guild of America and the SAG-AFTRA actors’ union have caused disruptions in other major Hollywood events, including the Emmy Awards.

During the Governors Awards ceremony, notable figures in the entertainment industry such as Angela Bassett, Mel Brooks, Carol Littleton, and Michelle Satter will receive prestigious honors. Bassett, Brooks, and Littleton will be given the Academy Honorary Awards, which celebrate exceptional lifetime achievement, significant contributions to the field of motion picture arts and sciences, or outstanding service to the Academy. Meanwhile, Satter, from the Sundance Institute, will be presented with the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award, bestowed upon individuals in the film industry who have made notable humanitarian efforts that bring credit to the field.
