Hollywood Actors’ Union Suggests Strike as Negotiation Deadline Expiries in Film Industry

The Hollywood actors’ union has recommended strike action after a missed negotiation deadline, potentially leading to the first simultaneous strike by writers and actors in over 60 years. The Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (Sag-Aftra), representing 160,000 actors, unanimously voted to recommend a strike, and the national board will make a decision on Thursday. The union claims that the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP), which represents major studios and streamers, refuses to offer a fair deal on crucial issues for Sag-Aftra members. The potential strike could immediately affect publicity efforts for the summer’s top films. The impact may also delay the Emmy awards and disrupt the San Diego Comic-Con. Hollywood A-listers have expressed support for a strike, urging their union leaders not to settle for a mediocre deal. The writers’ strike, which began on May 2, is already in its third month with no resolution in sight. Both unions voted overwhelmingly to authorize a strike, reflecting widespread discontent among creative workers in Hollywood over declining profits, job insecurity, and concerns about AI technology replacing them. The AMPTP represents both traditional film companies and digital disruptors.
