Holidaymakers from Ireland urged to be cautious of Saharan dust clouds and extreme 40C heatwave while visiting the Canary Islands

Irish travelers visiting the Canary Islands are being advised about the presence of Saharan dust clouds and high temperatures in the region. These dust clouds, composed of particulate matter from the Sahara Desert in northern Africa, can travel long distances and affect air quality. The sky may appear hazy or milky, potentially causing flight disruptions. According to Met Éireann, the dust is carried to the Canaries by east to northeasterly breezes from the desert. However, as the wind shifts to a northerly direction, the dust is expected to diminish. Despite the presence of the dust clouds, there have been no reported flight disruptions at Dublin Airport. Meanwhile, the Spanish meteorological service, AEMET, has issued red heatwave warnings for Fuerteventura, Lanzarote, and parts of La Palma, where temperatures are forecasted to exceed 40°C. These extreme temperatures pose a risk to human health, with daytime temperatures exceeding 40°C and nighttime temperatures above 30°C. Meteorologist Alan O’Reilly from Carlow Weather warned Irish holidaymakers about the calima wind and Saharan dust causing a haze in the sky, although the winds at lower levels are not too strong. It is not uncommon for these weather conditions to impact flights in the region.
