Hilarie Burton, One Tree Hill actress, alleges that a ‘creepy’ boss inserted himself into an episode solely to have a hugging interaction

In a recent interview on the Drama Queens podcast, Hilarie Burton, known for her role as Peyton Sawyer on the hit show One Tree Hill, opened up about a disturbing experience with her “creepy” boss. Although she didn’t mention his name, Burton recalled how he manipulated the situation to force her into a hug, even though they were not on speaking terms at the time. She described the incident as “so creepy,” as he wrote himself into an episode solely to have a moment of physical contact with her.

During the podcast episode, co-star Sophia Bush raised the question of whether renowned showrunners like Shonda Rhimes or Aaron Sorkin would ever cast themselves in their own shows, highlighting the inappropriate behavior exhibited by Burton’s boss.

Burton shared that despite having family members on set, including her boyfriend’s father, who was directing, and her brother, she still felt the need to ask her dad to be present as an additional protective measure. Throughout the day, Burton would regularly stand next to her dad, seeking refuge from any potential unwanted interactions.

To further discourage her boss’s advances, Burton’s dad and a sound mixer on the show went to the crew parking lot and playfully cracked bullwhips, sending a clear message of defiance.

It is worth noting that Burton and her co-stars, including Sophia Bush and Bethany Joy Lenz, were among the 18 women who accused the show’s creator, Mark Schwahn, of sexual harassment during the production of One Tree Hill back in 2017. In addition, 25 women from Schwahn’s subsequent show, The Royals, also came forward with accusations of varying degrees of sexual misconduct. As a result, Schwahn was fired from The Royals and faced severe backlash.

The impact of Schwahn’s behavior was significant, as Burton and her fellow accusers revealed that some of them sought treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). They detailed the psychological and emotional manipulation they experienced at the hands of Schwahn, emphasizing that the supervisors who were supposed to protect them failed to do so.

Despite the allegations, Schwahn never publicly addressed the accusations made against him. However, Burton found empowerment in speaking out against the abuse. She expressed how honesty is liberating and that remaining silent to protect others is not always the best course of action.

Overall, Burton’s story sheds light on the disturbing experiences that can occur within the entertainment industry and serves as a reminder of the importance of speaking up and holding individuals accountable for their actions.
