Contrary to the catchphrase “There can be only one,” the Highlander franchise offers more than just one movie. It encompasses films, TV shows, and cartoons that create an expansive Highlander universe. It’s a treasure trove waiting to be explored by IP excavators.
Director Chad Stahelski, known for John Wick 4, has been linked to a new Highlander project featuring Henry Cavill since 2021. Cavill, who has left Witcher and had multiple exits from the DC universe, has yet to take on the role of Connor MacLeod. But according to Stahelski, Highlander is still in the works.
In an interview with the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Stahelski revealed that they have “some very good elements” for the movie but want to ensure it has room to grow. They don’t want to simply remake Highlander; instead, they aim to expand the character’s unique mythology.
Stahelski mentioned that the story will involve familiar characters but also incorporate elements from the TV shows. It will serve as a prequel and set the stage for The Gathering, providing opportunities to expand the Highlander property.
Stahelski acknowledges that the original Highlander may not have been a great film, but it possesses a certain power. Despite its flaws, which include peculiar sword fights, odd dialogue, and a Queen soundtrack, the movie remains immensely enjoyable and entertaining to watch.
However, the production of the new Highlander film is currently on hold due to the ongoing strike. Fans eagerly anticipating Cavill’s portrayal of the legendary character will have to wait until the writers and actors reach a fair agreement.
