Officers in the Highland Park area of Los Angeles responded to a call of an assault with a deadly weapon on Saturday, during which they shot and wounded a suspect who claimed to be armed with a gun and threatening to harm someone.
The incident occurred around 12:25 p.m. in the 800 block of North Nolden Street, near the intersection of York Boulevard and Avenue 56. The Los Angeles Police Department released a statement regarding the incident on X.
According to the police statement, the officers encountered the suspect armed with a large knife as they entered a stairwell. In response, an officer-involved shooting took place.
After being struck by gunfire, the suspect received immediate first aid from the officers who then requested an ambulance. Los Angeles City Fire paramedics arrived and transported the suspect to a local hospital,” the statement explained. Fortunately, the suspect, a 51-year-old man, had stable vital signs and is expected to survive. There were no injuries reported among the officers or bystanders, and a large kitchen knife was recovered at the scene.
As a result of the ongoing investigation, streets in the vicinity of York Boulevard and Avenue 56 were anticipated to remain closed to traffic for several hours.
