Rupert Friend and Patricia Arquette star in the Apple TV+ comedy series, “High Desert,” where they play characters with ambitious aspirations. Despite their differences, Friend’s Guru Bob and Arquette’s Peggy both live in the grey area between con artists and tricksters. Friend shared in a recent Zoom interview that he would like to see their characters interact in more relaxed circumstances and get to know each other better.

The first season of “High Desert,” directed by Emmy-winner Jay Roach and executive produced by Ben Stiller, concludes this week on Apple TV+. The show follows Peggy, a drug addict and compulsive liar, who becomes a private investigator after the death of her mother. Guru Bob is one of the eccentric characters Peggy encounters in her new career.

Friend described the relationship between Guru Bob and Peggy as contentious, with Peggy’s investigative activities causing annoyance to Guru Bob. Their first encounter involves Peggy intruding into Bob’s home during a party, leading to a clash of personalities. Despite the challenges posed by Peggy, Friend found himself rooting for her success.

The actor was initially drawn to the series due to its unique and “crazy” premise, as well as the opportunity to portray the quirky character of Guru Bob. Friend praised director Jay Roach for skillfully capturing the tone of the show, which oscillates between hilarity and heartbreak.

Broadway legend Bernadette Peters also stars in the series, playing Peggy’s late mother in flashbacks. Peters expressed her enthusiasm for the project, describing it as the best thing she had read in a long time. She praised Arquette’s comedic abilities, highlighting the surprising and different aspect of her performance in “High Desert.”

The series delves into the deep bond between Peggy and her mother, despite the challenges they face. Peters highlighted the underlying reality and emotional depth of the show, particularly in its exploration of loss. She emphasized the themes of hope and second chances conveyed throughout the series.
