During a daring incident on Saturday, a group of five suspects vandalized showcases at a prestigious jewelry store in Manhattan Beach. The situation escalated when one of the store employees used a firearm to defend the premises.
The robbery took place at Prestige Jewelers, located at 3001 N. Sepulveda Blvd., and was reported to the Manhattan Beach Police Department at 12:40 p.m., according to an official press statement.
Clad in hoodies and armed with hammers, the suspects broke into the store and managed to steal some jewelry before the intervention.
Upon hearing the gunshot, the suspects quickly escaped from the store and fled in waiting vehicles, which were last seen heading southbound on Sepulveda Boulevard.
Remarkably, no employees were harmed during the incident. However, it remains unknown if any of the perpetrators sustained injuries.
The theft prompted a swift response from officers of the Gardena and El Segundo police departments, who assisted the Manhattan Beach Police Department in apprehending the suspects.
Mayor Richard Montgomery expressed gratitude towards the neighboring police departments for their support in these challenging times. He emphasized that the safety of the entire city of Manhattan Beach remains the top priority, especially during the mourning period following the recent loss of Officer Chad Swanson.
Officer Swanson tragically lost his life in a car accident on the San Diego (405) Freeway just three days ago, while on his way to work.
