HeatFlask, the self-heating innovation, secures victory at the 2023 Annual Research Awards with no requirement for an oven.

Six ingenious industrial engineering seniors from the Technological Institute of the Philippines (T.I.P.) in Quezon City have transformed the concept of reheating food and drinks without traditional heating devices into a reality. Their innovation, called ‘HeatFlask’, garnered recognition at the 2023 Annual Research Awards (ARAW) hosted by the Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP), winning both the Outstanding Research of the Year and Best Commercialization Research awards.

Unlike ordinary containers, HeatFlask is a unique self-heating vessel made of stainless steel, specifically designed for individuals on-the-go who need to warm up canned food and drinks without access to a stove or microwave oven. The flask contains an embedded heat pack that initiates the reheating process. The idea for HeatFlask originated from Francine Daphne Carigma, who was inspired by a Filipino startup using a similar reheating method with boxes. Carigma shared her idea with her team, resulting in the creation of HeatFlask. While the current product is limited to canned goods, Carigma anticipates future designs will expand its capabilities.

The success of HeatFlask can be attributed to the commitment and dedication of the team, led by Allen Serrano and Francine Daphne Carigma, under the guidance of their advisor, Engr. Jaypy Tenerife. Tenerife expressed immense pride in his students’ achievement and praised their persuasive business model, which highlighted the unique selling proposition of the prototype. This played a crucial role in distinguishing HeatFlask from other entries.

The project also involved the contributions of other industrious industrial engineering students from T.I.P., including Cyrdio Adrian Dela Peña, Irah Scott Naldoza, Jemuel Tan, and Neriel John Villamor. Their collaborative efforts showcased their dedication and commitment to innovation.

But T.I.P. didn’t stop at HeatFlask. A team of civil engineering students from T.I.P. Manila secured the first runner-up position in the Best Scientific Research category. Their groundbreaking study titled “Enhancing the Seismic Resilience of 42-Story Reinforced Concrete Structure with Fluid Viscous Damper System Using Modal Decomposition Method” proposes a cost-effective solution for strengthening high-rise buildings against earthquakes by utilizing energy-dissipating devices called fluid viscous dampers. These dampers absorb seismic waves and prevent cracks and significant property damage. While the system may be costly depending on the scale of construction, it offers a more efficient solution to the complex problem of optimal damper placement faced by many engineers. The team’s choice of the modal decomposition method was commended by their advisor, Engr. Dustin Glenn Cuevas, for its efficiency and consistent performance.

The Annual Research Awards (ARAW), now in its 14th year, took place at the PUP campus in Santa Mesa, Manila, in collaboration with the Department of Science and Technology-Technology Application and Promotion Institute (DOST-TAPI). The awards showcased the theme of “Resiliency and Sustainability in Times of Post-Pandemic: The Commitment of Serving the Country through Engineering, Science, and Technology.” With 97 submissions from schools nationwide, the event demonstrates the Philippines’ dedication to innovative solutions in challenging times.
