Health Secretary Steve Barclay Condemns Striking Doctors in England, While Scottish Medics Celebrate ‘Record’ 12.4% Pay Deal

Steve Barclay strongly criticizes striking junior doctors in England for compromising patient safety and wasting NHS funds, while Scottish medics celebrate a ‘record’ pay deal of 12.4%.

The Health Secretary expressed his concern that the recent walkout has resulted in significant financial losses, which could have been better utilized to address the extensive waiting lists plaguing the healthcare system.

Statistics reveal that over 61,000 medical appointments and operations were cancelled due to the four-day strike, during which junior doctors, demanding a 35% salary increase, refused to provide any care, even in emergency situations.

Meanwhile, the British Medical Association announced that junior doctors in Scotland have enthusiastically accepted a ‘record’ pay offer from the Scottish government.

Union leaders proudly stated that they have successfully demonstrated their influence by securing a 12.4% wage hike and a guarantee of pay increase in line with inflation until at least 2026/27.

Over 80% of participating junior doctors in the BMA Scotland ballot voted in favor of accepting the offer (81.64%), with a turnout of 71.24%.

Mr. Barclay emphasized, “Yet again, more appointments and procedures have been postponed due to the BMA strike. This action not only jeopardizes patient well-being but also costs the NHS substantial amounts that could be utilized to alleviate waiting lists. We have already granted a 10.3% raise to first-year
