Health Officials Issue Warning About Potential Hepatitis A Exposure at Panda Express

Health officials in Lancaster are collaborating with a Panda Express to inform consumers about a potential hepatitis A exposure, as announced on Saturday.

The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health has detected a food handler at the Panda Express located at 44411 Valley Central Way with a hepatitis A virus infection.

As of now, there have been no additional cases identified.

The health department is advising individuals who consumed food or beverages from this particular Panda Express between July 21 and Aug. 4 to consider getting a hepatitis A vaccination. However, this recommendation does not apply to those who have already completed the hepatitis A vaccine series or individuals known to have had a past infection.

Local pharmacies or physicians’ offices may offer hepatitis A vaccinations. Additionally, the county health department will be providing free hepatitis A vaccinations to individuals who were exposed at the Antelope Valley Health Center, located at 335 E. Ave. K, from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. on Monday, and from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday through Friday.

Hepatitis A is a liver infection caused by the hepatitis A virus. It is highly contagious and can be transmitted through the fecal-oral route (when contaminated feces from an infected person are ingested by another person during close personal contact), or by consuming contaminated food or water.

Most adults with acute hepatitis A experience symptoms such as fever, fatigue, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, dark colored urine, and jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes). The severity of symptoms can vary.

While getting vaccinated promptly is likely to prevent infection, those who receive the vaccination too late may still be at risk of contracting the virus.
