He Is Turning Himself into a Martyr

In a bid to overturn his loss in Georgia’s 2020 presidential election, former U.S. President and Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump may be facing an unprecedented fourth indictment. Gabriel Sterling, a top Georgia election official, expressed his concern about these criminal cases, stating that they have been “giving oxygen” to Trump’s 2024 presidential campaign.

Sterling, a Republican, emphasized that Trump’s claims of election fraud have been unsubstantiated, as he lost the state in 2020. However, due to the strong affiliation people have with their political parties in the U.S., many of Trump’s supporters are inclined to believe him.

Speaking on the ABC program “This Week,” Sterling pointed out that Trump is portraying himself as a victim and a martyr, which resonates with a significant portion of the American population who view some of his claims as plausible, albeit a stretch.

Sterling had previously voiced concerns about potential violence following the election, and he reiterated this worry on Sunday. He stressed that election-related violence remains his “biggest concern” as individuals could be easily radicalized to engage in reckless behavior.

The investigation in Georgia is being overseen by Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis, who is expected to present her case to a grand jury in the upcoming week. According to NBC News, an indictment of the former president on state charges could result from this presentation.

If indicted, this would mark the fourth criminal case against Trump since March, and the second related to his efforts to prevent President Joe Biden from assuming office.

Sterling confirmed that he has testified before the special grand jury that initially investigated the case and has also participated in two interviews with the DA’s officers. He expressed his commitment to telling the truth and providing honest answers if called to testify further.

According to a report by CNN, Atlanta prosecutors have obtained text messages and emails that directly link members of Trump’s legal team to a voting system breach in Coffee County in January 2021. This breach was part of a “top-down push by Trump’s team” to find evidence of election fraud.

In a speech in New Hampshire on Tuesday, Trump confidently stated that he expects to be indicted in Georgia soon, claiming, “I should have four by sometime next week.”
