An experienced foil surfer had a thrilling encounter off the coast of Oahu, Hawaii when he came face-to-face with a massive 20-foot great white shark. Nick Kapule was training for the Kaiwi Channel race, a 32-mile foil surfing competition, when he spotted a huge shadow that he initially believed to be a whale. Curiosity got the best of him, and he approached the shadow, only to realize it was a massive shark with a razor-sharp tail fin. The encounter left Kapule in awe and fear, as he tried not to fall off his precarious foil surfboard.
Kapule managed to keep his composure and maintain a safe distance from the shark, avoiding any aggressive behavior that could provoke an attack. Five minutes later, he breathed a sigh of relief, grateful that he escaped unharmed. Reflecting on the encounter, Kapule admitted that it was a scary experience. Shark sightings are not uncommon in the area, but encounters with such a large shark are rare. After posting the video of the encounter on Instagram, Kapule discovered that others had seen the same shark but were unable to document it.
Although Kapule initially thought the shark was a tiger shark, he later learned from lifeguards that it was actually a great white shark known to frequent the area. Lifeguards advised surfers to poke the shark in the nose if it approaches, as a means of deterring aggression. They also emphasized the need to respect the fact that the ocean is the shark’s home. Kapule reiterated this sentiment, recognizing that humans must show respect and caution while enjoying the ocean’s beauty.
